Read below what Willamette Week has to say:"(In House District 38) Democrat Chris Garrett... is running against Republican Steve Griffith... Both Garrett and Griffith are strong candidates with relevant experience.
"Griffith put in two terms on the Portland School Board, and Garrett served as an aide to Senate President Peter Courtney (D-Salem). Griffith, 62, retired from Stoel Rives last year and says he is dedicating his golden years to public service. Garrett is a fine candidate, too, but the House Dems already boast a deep bench of lawmakers with similar profiles.
"Griffith, on the other hand, is exceptional. A graduate of Harvard, Stanford and Oxford, the moderate (read “pro-choice”) Republican has credentials rarely seen in the Capitol and brings 30 years of legal and public-service experience. The length and depth of that experience—particularly eight years on the board of the state’s largest school district—makes him a better choice than Garrett, 32."
For more in-depth coverage and a rare side-by-side comparison of Steve Griffith and Chris Garrett, please watch the Willamette Week Candidate Interview.

Dear friends,
Thirty years ago when I graduated from Stanford, I loaded up my little Fiat and headed straight to Oregon to see what it was that ‘lit’ up the eyes of all the Oregonians I had met.
I never left.
I found out what it is to be an Oregonian. The people of this state are proud of Oregon, independent in their judgments, generous to a fault with their time and at their best working together.
Building bridges and celebrating differences will be the cornerstone of my campaign for the House District 38 seat. I think I match this community because our corner of the world - Southwest Portland and Lake Oswego - is a wonderful incubator of progressive ideas.
Over the years I have proudly demonstrated my "Oregon Independence." I firmly believe there is a role for responsible government made up of legislators who show integrity, independence and grit - just like Oregonians!
I am not a partisan person, and I think few of you enjoy the partisanship we have experienced in recent years. I approach the job of serving you in the spirit of open-minded dialogue. What I hope to bring to the Legislature is less calculation and more respect.
I love Oregon, and I am dedicating the rest of my life to helping this state live up to its values and its promise. I want our children, and their children, to have that light in their eye when they tell their friends they are from the wonderful state of Oregon!
